Penang Hawkers Food : My Favourites [First posted in 1996, Updated 2nd Dec 2009]

I know...I know... There is bound to be better places which I may not aware of !  Anyway, one man's meat... another's poison and these are my favourite hawker food :-

    Just wanted to say that I found your site quite interesting. I'm also from Penang, by the way. However--one minor difference of opinion: The best "Wantan Mee", I think, is in Chulia Street.

    Well--since you asked--the best wantan mee, I think, is at that section of Chulia Street which intersects Love Lane. It's near this noisy coffee-house at the corner which has occasional bands and is frequented by tourists.

    There are a couple of wantan mee stalls in that area, so be sure to get the right one. It's located next to the Indian newspaper vendor, and is manned by a middle-aged lady (short hair, kind of stocky), her two lanky sons (sometimes only one show up--you know how guys are, tsk, tsk) and her daughter (sweet looking, with pony tail--er, on her hair, that is).


    Again, like most of the best hawkers, the vendors lead kind of a vampiric existence--i.e. they only set up their stall after 8 p.m. or so. Apart from wantan mee, there's also a curry laksa stall, which shows up only after 9:00p.m. (or 9:30 p.m.--they're not very punctual), a "Sar Hor Fun" stall, the inevitable and necessary drinks stall (which serves quite decent watermelon juice), a Char Koay Teow stall (which you should avoid), a Lor Mee stall, an Apom stall across the street, to mention but a few. The curry laksa is quite alright too if you're interested. Anyway, do try it out and tell me what you think.
